I would often visit my grandmother and Aunt Vera’s house. They lived at 119 Ratcliffe Road in Loughborough.
The had a lovely little house and a beautiful Garden.
One year I was at their house, and so were many of my cousins. Granny and Vera had asked the children’s parents if they could stay at their house for 2 weeks. Everyone was excited as it was the big summer holidays and, in those days, we had 9 weeks off school. An awfully long time.
Aunt Vera was and still is a very kind person and thinks of everyone. As my cousins were running up and down the garden, she said to me. “We have room for one more.” I was incredibly happy that she had asked me. I am the youngest in our family and my brothers are 9,11 and 12 years older than me. My cousins have brothers and sisters, and they are very close in age. My parents said yes and then within a week we were all at their house. Me (Ann), Mary, Brendan, James and Young Malachy.
We slept in the big room on the front of the house
Everyday day we would get up, have breakfast and then play, play, play.
Our other cousins were on the same street and they lived a few doors up at 111 Ratcliffe Road, they didn’t stay overnight, but came down everyday
Most of the time we were in the back garden. We picked teams and played tag, Olympics, skipping, running, the list goes on. I really enjoyed it at their house and have never forgotten it. Thankyou Aunt Vera.
